This is a (slightly lengthy) video showing some of the training and handling I'm doing with these Doberman mix pups. I figured everyone who's interested in this litter or following this SandSpur Ranch adventure might enjoy. (Sorry the video quality is so poor - I was a bit more focused on working with the pups than videoing the action - hence there is a lot of bouncing, shaky video, and so on. Sorry!) *In the section where I am teaching Hanover not to bite, I want to clarify that I do realize this is totally normal puppy behavior. I'm just using the opportunity to teach him self-control and respect for people - not trying to force him to grow up too fast.

Well, as most of you know already from looking at the "Puppies" page, I have a litter of 9 Doberman mix pups on the SandSpur Ranch right now. It's a bit of a story how I got them and there are a lot of factors involved in this situation. Basically, they were sort of a rescue (rescue mainly for the owner from the pups) and I am placing them for a friend of our veterinarian. The owner did not mean to have this litter of puppies and kept her dogs in a fenced yard, so they are not a "backyard breeder" cross where someone was just trying to make a quick buck by producing mixed-breed puppies. They have had their first treatment for worms and are already starting to lose the potbellied look they had when they first arrived. They also made the switch from regular Purina puppy chow to the quality, grain-free food I feed all our dogs and they have all handled it great. They are surprisingly quiet most of the time, which is a blessing. I rode Fannie (my horse) over to the pen a day or two ago and they checked her out, but didn't throw fits over her like my BC pups usually do. Overall they seem watchful but pretty low key. I tossed an old soccer ball and a couple ropes in the pen this morning and they love them! It was a lot of fun going out there to take the weekly pictures and watching them play. Unfortunately the lens I had on my camera is designed for subjects at a little more distance than the puppies were part of the time (which is why the video clip of them attacking my skirt was so zoomed in.) They are being raised now the same way I raise my pure Border collies, with lots of love, quality food, and plenty of socialization. They have settled in GREAT and are very sweet, fairly calm, and of course, super playful! Enjoy the pictures and video. I will plan to post a weekly update for everyone's enjoyment, and especially to update the new owners as the puppies are sold. Click on the pictures to enlarge and to see the captions. *About the video: It's nothing special; I was just playing around, trying to figure out my new video editing software (Lightworks) and having fun compiling the clips with the music (March of the Toreadors, from Carmen, by Georges Bizet.) |
